What's new in JuicyType 0.9.5.1
JuicyType 0.9.5.1 is mostly about color: a new view that lists every color your applied effects paint, live preview while you mix a new one, and rows that finally say which color they control. Windows gets license activation, Aura and Wobble gain new shaping controls, and a render that drags on now looks after itself.
Panel
- A new by-color view lists every color your applied effects paint, one row per color, so you can replace that color everywhere from its chip or alter it live in an inline editor.
- Tick "List used places" and each row shows where its color is used, as "Effect > caption".
- Color rows now name the exact color they control — Face, Bevel color 1, 2 and middle, Repeat start and end for top, side and slope, Aura color, Alternate, Colorize 1 to 3 and Second color — instead of every row just reading "Color".
- Creating a new color previews it live on the chip's target while you dial it in, and Cancel puts the target back the way it was without leaving anything in Undo.
- The new color sheet adds an HSB model, with hue in degrees and saturation and brightness in percent, beside CMYK, RGB, Grayscale and PANTONE.
- While you edit a color the other rows stand down, and a New Swatch tick decides whether your edit makes a new swatch or updates the one that is there.
- Each color row gives the swatch name its own line with how many places use it, an Edit link on the row, and unnamed colors are now written out instead of shown as a placeholder.
- The color menu lists New first, then the colors this artwork already uses, then the rest.
- The panel header replaces the title with three icons — Add fx on the left, then fx options, then Color — in a larger top bar, and the two color views switch from the header.
- The [+] tile has left the applied strip for good; the icon in the top bar is the way to add an effect, and the tile only appears while nothing is applied.
- With nothing applied the strip reads "Add fx to the selected text", and it names the Arrow tool when nothing is selected at all.
- The Flavor gallery adds "Show flavors: Mine / Default" so you can hide either category.
- Tick "Use actual object colors" in the gallery and a flavor's recipe lands on your object while the object keeps its own colors.
- The ⋯ menu drops Reset in favor of "Remove all effects from text".
- Unticking "Show face options" hides Fill on top, case, Knock out and Raise.
- Effects made with an older version of JuicyType now carry a chip on their applied tile, with a note offering Dismiss or Update.
- "Share feedback" is reachable from everywhere in the panel, with Feature request, Bug and Feedback to choose from and a beta note above the message.
- Add flavor and Flavor library have new icons.
- Window > JuicyType is a single menu item now, with no submenu.
Windows
- Windows now asks for a license key: while unlicensed, the activation screen fills the panel with key, buy and trial.
- Once licensed, a status row sits at the bottom of the panel and opens the license detail, where you can deactivate this machine or renew.
- Your license is checked offline, with the same grace periods as the Mac build.
- The Speedview eye is in the Windows panel too.
Aura
- Aura now starts from the artboard, with a "Use shape below" option and a Round corners control that runs from a square through to an oval that fills the artboard.
- The star shape gains Wave, with Ridges and Ridge size, and Twirl.
- Aura adds Text fit, alternate and bubble opacity controls.
Wobble
- Pour now adds weight to the upright parts of the letters, heaviest at the baseline and fading away toward the x-height (mirrored when Pour is negative), while the font keeps its own shapes.
- Wobble adds an Edge texture option.
3D
- The Mode popup now sits just above 3D style.
- The Top, Side and Slope chips dim and stop responding while Repeat extrusion's Color ramp is setting them, with a tooltip saying so; with Push on they stay live.
- Letters pushed to different depths no longer merge into one another.
Speed
- A render that takes too long now switches to Draft by itself and the footer tells you what happened, and it arms again when you go back to Final by hand.
- The first time that happens, a message explains Speedview, the dashed outline and the eye, with "Don't show this again" and a one-line reminder left in the footer.
- A "Show Speedview outline" tick turns the outline on and off, and Speedview color lets you pick yellow, magenta, cyan, red or gray.
- Exports render in Final even when the panel is sitting in Draft.
- Raised strokes now stop when the time limit is reached, so a very heavy font no longer keeps rendering long past it.
Strokes
- Fill on top now says what it reorders, and grays out when neither Strokes nor Raise is on.
Split Face
- The divider controls sit under a "Shift divider line center" heading, Angle is now Divider angle, and the axis parallel to the divider grays out.
Plaid
- A sett too complex to build as a pattern now draws flat instead.
Install and update
- JuicyType checks for a new version on its own and shows a notice row in the footer when there is one, which stays dismissed once you dismiss it.
- "Check for Updates…" has been added to the menu.
License
- The license detail opens from any view in the panel, not just some of them.
- While you are on a trial, the footer shows the message for where you are in the trial, with the days left or the end date filled in and a button through to checkout.
Fixes
- Undoing a change left the panel showing the old colors and settings until you changed the selection.
- Setting a color on a Sticker band could crash Illustrator, and the effects came back reset.
- Changing a color or a thread in Plaid could turn the face transparent; artwork already saved that way now draws at its earlier scale until you set a thread again.
- Colors set on raised strokes were gone when you left the effect and came back.
- Strong Twirl and Wave settings could make Aura's starburst loops cross over themselves.
- The dashed Draft outline skipped thin and stroked shapes, such as 3D in stroke-only mode, so some artwork had no outline at all.
- The used colors at the top of the color menu kept listing colors the effect no longer uses.
- Rows in the by-color editor drew on top of one another.
- The fx options icon did not close the effects drawer, so you had to click Add fx again to get rid of it.
- The Speedview on and off icons were the wrong way around.
- Opening Add fx could leave the top of the effects grid hidden under the applied strip.
- Activating on more machines than your license allows now tells you the seats are used up instead of saying the key is not one we recognize.
- The version shown in the footer could be wrong.
To update, close Illustrator, run the new installer, then open Illustrator again. Your license carries over.
