What's new in JuicyType 0.9.5.4

September 18, 2026 · Beta · macOS

JuicyType 0.9.5.4 is a beta update, and the headline is Speedview: a Draft render mode with its own eye in the panel header that makes the slow effects noticeably faster. It also brings a rebuilt Colors view that lists every color your effects paint so you can change any of them from one place, and the first JuicyType for Windows.

Speed

  • An eye in the panel header switches the whole panel between Draft and Final, re-rendering every JuicyType object in the document as you switch, and your artwork goes back to Final before you export or print.
  • Every effect renders faster in Draft.
  • Drip is noticeably faster in Draft, with the same drips in the same places.
  • Shadowpuppet is noticeably faster in Draft, casting one hard-edged shadow at full strength; the light pool, the face out of the light and the solid body are unchanged.
  • Wobble combined with Strokes, Sticker or 3D renders noticeably faster.
  • A render that takes too long switches itself to Draft and the footer says what happened, and going back to Final by hand arms it again so it never interrupts twice for the same object.
  • The first time that happens, a message explains Speedview, the dashed outline and the eye, with "Don't show this again".
  • Automatic Speedview is a toggle in the ⋯ menu.
  • Text rendered in Draft carries a dashed outline that you can switch off with "Show Speedview outline", in Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Red or Gray.
  • A raised-stroke render on a very detailed font now gives up when it should instead of running on long past it.

Panel

  • A new By color view lists every color your applied effects paint, one row per color, and you can replace that color everywhere from its chip or edit it live in the row's own editor.
  • The Colors square cycles effects → by effect → by color, and both lists now sit on one screen under "By color" and "By effect" headings, filling the panel body.
  • Tick any number of colors in the By color list and H, S and B sliders appear below it: each ticked color moves a share of the way to its limit, so a set that was never uniform keeps its spread.
  • Every color you adjust that way gets its own new swatch, so the originals stay untouched everywhere else they are used.
  • Each By color row carries the color's own name, its chip, how many places it paints and a way in to Edit.
  • Creating a new color previews live on the artwork as you dial it, restores everything on Cancel, and leaves nothing behind in Edit > Undo.
  • The new color sheet adds HSB beside CMYK, RGB, Grayscale and PANTONE, shows before and after abutting as one bar, and has a "New swatch" tick that decides whether you make a new swatch or update the one you picked.
  • Every color menu opens with Edit, then the colors this artwork already uses, then the rest of the document's swatches.
  • Rows say which color they are — Repeat start and end top, side and slope, Aura color, Alternate, Bevel color 1, 2 and middle, Colorize 1–3, Second color, Face — instead of all reading "Color".
  • The Face fill is always in the list, swatch or not, and editing it makes a swatch the way editing any unnamed color does.
  • Automatic 3D wall shades and Raise panes stay out of the By color list because they follow the face, but a wall you have pointed at a document swatch yourself is listed.
  • The panel title is replaced by three larger icons — fx options, Add fx and Color — which stay in place when the Flavor gallery is open and go dim when the selection cannot use them.
  • The fx options icon now closes the effects drawer as well as opening it.
  • The [+] tile has left the applied strip for good; the top bar is the way to add an effect.
  • The empty strip reads "Add fx to the selected text", or names the Arrow tool when nothing is selected.
  • Switched-off effects move to the end of the applied strip and read a little brighter.
  • Section headers are bigger: the effect's name in bold with a large checkbox beside it.
  • "Show face options" now reads "Options", hides Fill on top, case, Knock out and Raise when unticked, and leaves the same air around the face area either way.
  • The case button sits at the right edge of the Face fill row, clear of the options tick.
  • An effect applied with an older version of that effect carries a chip on its tile, with a note offering Dismiss or Update.
  • Settings now opens in the panel body, and the ⋯ menu keeps actions — including "Remove all effects from text" — instead of switches, with Feature request first and effect options in a submenu.
  • The Juice Bar and Flavor Library are now the Flavor gallery, where flavors say whether they are yours or a default and "Show flavors: Mine / Default" hides either category.
  • "[X] Use actual object colors" lands a flavor's recipe while the object keeps its own colors.
  • Add flavor and Flavor library have new icons, and the Upload/Share buttons are gone from the gallery.
  • 3D is first in the effects order.
  • Window > JuicyType is a single menu item now, with no flyout.
  • A first-launch welcome sheet shows where to find JuicyType, with "Don't show this again" ticked.
  • The welcome tour has wider magenta-outlined bubbles with the arrow beside the words, centered steps clear of the controls, and ends "That's it, now you can get cooking!".
  • Share feedback lets you pick Feature request, Bug or Feedback, and the screenshot preview appears only while "Include a screenshot" is ticked.

Windows

  • JuicyType runs on Windows: the panel opens inside Illustrator from Window > JuicyType, with the effect picker and the picked effect's controls.
  • The controls work as they do on the Mac — popups, ticks, buttons, padlocks and two-dot range sliders — and rows appear and disappear under the same conditions.
  • Color chips show the color the artwork really has and open the same swatch menu, with team colors, presets, the document's swatches and gradients.
  • You can type into a value box rather than only clicking it up and down: Enter or Tab commits, Esc reverts, and the arrow keys step (larger with Shift).
  • Licensing works as on the Mac: the activation screen fills the panel until you enter a key, and a status row sits at the bottom once you are licensed.
  • The Speedview eye is in the Windows panel too.
  • Shadowpuppet is not in the Windows build.
  • Windows has its own installer and a signed uninstaller.

Cubes

  • Apply per cube: tick Split, Slice or Shape and that effect runs inside every block instead of once across the whole word, so it repeats identically block to block (each tick is greyed while its effect is not applied).

Aura

  • Aura takes the artboard as its shape by default, and "Use shape below" lets it take the shape under it instead.
  • Round corners runs the artboard shape from square through to the oval that fills it.
  • A star Aura gains Wave, with Ridges and Ridge size, and Twirl.
  • Aura adds Text fit, alternate and bubble opacity controls.

Shadowpuppet

  • Wall shade puts either the floor or the wall outside the lamp's pool of light into shade, in the shadow's own color.
  • "Out of light" is hidden while Light pool is off, since there is no cone to be outside of.

Split Face

  • A "Gap wall color" chip beside Gap fill color lets you color the sides the gap opens through the body, which used to be colored automatically and go flat under a tilt.
  • The heading reads "Shift divider line center", Angle is now Divider angle, and the axis running parallel to the divider greys out.

3D

  • The Mode popup sits just above 3D style.
  • While Repeat extrusion's Color ramp is painting the layers, the Top, Side and Slope chips above are dimmed and say so; with Push on they stay live.

Strokes

  • "Fill on top" has become "Face in front", the first row of the Strokes section, shown only while it can actually reorder the face against the flat bands.

Wobble

  • Wobble has an Edge texture control.

Plaid

  • The heaviest Plaid setts now draw flat instead of trying to build a pattern too large to place.

Install and update

  • "Check for Updates…" is in the menu, and JuicyType also checks on its own and shows a notice row in the footer when there is a new version, which stays dismissed once you dismiss it.
  • An uninstaller for Mac and Windows removes every trace of JuicyType, leaving a report on your Desktop first.

License

  • Until you enter a key the activation screen fills the panel, where one clickable line starts the trial on the website and "Buy a license" opens the pricing page.
  • Once licensed, a status row at the bottom of the panel shows your license and how long it runs, and opens the license detail from any panel mode.
  • Renew is hidden on a lifetime license, "Deactivate this machine" asks before it acts, and a lifetime beta license reads "Beta · lifetime".
  • While you are on a trial, the footer shows the message for where you are in it with that message's own buttons, and the messages arrive with the daily update check so they still show offline.

Fixes

  • Changes made in the panel could be lost on save: you would open a file, make changes, save and close, and reopen to find everything applied since Illustrator's last own command gone.
  • Illustrator could crash while you set a color on a Sticker band, and the effects came back reset after the recovery.
  • Changing a color or a thread in Plaid set the pattern to nothing and the face went transparent.
  • Turning 3D off and back on overwrote the depth you had set with its own starting depth.
  • In Repeat extrusion, raising the face or the stroke bands ate into the gap between copies, so a wide gap read like a narrow one.
  • 3D on raised strokes did not match 3D on a plain letter: the receding sides stepped like a staircase and the outermost stroke's rim came apart.
  • Colors set on raised stroke bands were gone when you came back to the artwork.
  • Push blocks merged letters that sit at different push depths.
  • Halftone's Feather stopped dead in a straight line at the edge of the letter instead of fading out all the way round.
  • The Spacing sliders in Aura and Party! ran backwards, closing the gaps as you raised them — higher is now more space, and artwork you have already made renders exactly as it did.
  • Party! spaced letters by their nearest points, so a pair touching at a single tip sat far apart while two round letters jammed together; spacing now follows the space you actually see between them.
  • Aura's rays could cross over themselves under a strong Twirl and Wave on a pointed shape.
  • Cubes broke a word with no spaces in it into separate blocks when two wide letters left a large gap between them.
  • A knocked-out letter in Cubes was painted straight back over in the Face fill color instead of reading as a hole — it now punches all the way through and overrides Face color and Face raise.
  • The Colors pane listed colors from applied effects that were switched off and drawing nothing.
  • An undo changed the artwork's colors without the panel following, so the chips showed colors the art no longer had.
  • Deselecting the text left the panel stuck in Colors mode with nothing to list; it now drops out, and selecting that text again brings the view back.
  • The effects grid changed its column count and tile size whenever the panel was resized, so every effect moved; it keeps three columns and scrolls when they do not fit.
  • Adding an effect cut off the top of the grid for a moment, and the grid could build taller than the room under the applied strip.
  • The change mark drew on rows you had not changed, so a block of rows carried a column of identical glyphs that read as decoration.
  • Ticking the face options a second time laid the section out wrong.
  • The buttons on a Flavor gallery tile did nothing, because the tile's enlarged picture sat on top of them.
  • A color menu could show a preset's name, such as Black, beside a color the artwork does not actually use.
  • The version in the footer could name a build other than the one installed.
  • Activating on more machines than your license allows said the key was not one we recognize instead of saying the seats are used up.
  • The notice text on the activation screen was clipped.
  • The Ribbon Banner stroke row overlapped its own label.

To update, close Illustrator, run the new installer, then open Illustrator again. Your license carries over.
