What's new in JuicyType 0.9.5.5

September 18, 2026 · Beta · macOS

This release is about speed and color: a new Draft mode redraws heavy artwork noticeably faster while you work, and the panel gains a By color view that gathers every color your effects paint into one list you can edit in place. JuicyType also runs on Windows for the first time, and a long list of fixes follows.

Speed

  • An eye in the panel header switches between Draft and Final, and JuicyType goes back to Final before you export or print.
  • Drip and Shadowpuppet redraw dramatically faster in Draft, with the same drips and the shadow cast hard-edged instead of soft.
  • Every effect draws its outlines a little more coarsely in Draft, which makes wobbled text in particular much faster.
  • Wobble is noticeably faster with Strokes, Sticker and 3D in Final as well.
  • Text drawn in Draft is marked with a dashed Speedview outline you can switch off, in Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Red or Gray, with gray the default.
  • When a render takes too long the panel switches to Draft by itself and says so, explained once per launch with a Don't show this again tick and a one-line reminder in the footer.
  • The automatic switch now waits for two slow renders in a row, so one unlucky render no longer moves you, and you can turn it off in the ⋯ menu.
  • Heavy artwork with raised strokes — a font-menu preview, for instance — stops when the render runs out of time instead of carrying on long past it.

Panel

  • A new By color view lists every color your applied effects paint, one row each with the color's name, its chip and how many places it paints, so you can replace it everywhere from the chip or edit it in place.
  • The color editor is rebuilt around one grid and one way in per row, with the before and after abutting as a single bar and the list staying put while you edit.
  • Tick any number of colors in the By color list and H, S and B sliders appear to nudge them all together, each moving a share of its own range, with every ticked color getting its own new swatch so the originals stay untouched.
  • The new color sheet adds HSB alongside CMYK, RGB, Grayscale and PANTONE.
  • While you dial a new color you see it live on the artwork, and Cancel puts the old color back without leaving anything in Undo.
  • Every color menu starts with Edit, then New, then the colors this artwork already uses, then the rest.
  • Rows say which color they are — Bevel color 1, 2 and middle, Aura color, Alternate, Repeat start and end, Colorize 1 to 3, Second color, Face — instead of all reading "Color".
  • The list covers every color you can actually change, including the Face fill and colors picked from a chip's own rows, while 3D wall and Raise shades that follow the face automatically stay out, with their own controls in By effect.
  • By color and By effect switch from the header, both lists share one screen, and a color with no swatch name is written out rather than shown as a code.
  • The panel header carries icons for Add fx, fx options and the color views in place of the Applied Effects title, and the top bar's icons are larger.
  • The effects grid always has three columns, so the tiles stay the same size and in the same place as the panel changes size.
  • 3D comes first in the effects grid, and what were the Juice Bar and Flavor Library are now the Flavor gallery.
  • The [+] tile has left the applied strip for good — the utility row's icon is the way in — and with nothing applied the strip reads "Add fx to the selected text", or names the Arrow tool when nothing is selected.
  • Effects you have switched off move to the end of the applied strip and read a touch brighter.
  • The Face fill row gains an Options tick that hides Fill on top, case, Knock out and Raise, with the case button moved to the right edge clear of it.
  • Section headers are bigger, with the effect's name in bold beside a large checkbox, and the face area keeps the same air whether Options is open or not.
  • An effect applied with an older version of that effect shows a chip on its tile and a note offering Update or Dismiss.
  • The Flavor gallery can show just your own flavors or just the defaults, applies a flavor's recipe with Use actual object colors while the object keeps its colors, has new icons for Add flavor and Flavor library, and no longer offers Share or Upload.
  • Settings opens in the panel body, and the ⋯ menu keeps actions instead of switches: Remove all effects from text in place of Reset, plus an Effect options submenu.
  • Share feedback offers Feature request, Bug and Feedback, and the screenshot preview appears only while Include a screenshot is ticked.
  • The welcome tour has wider bubbles with a magenta outline, the arrow beside the words, steps centered on what they point at, and nothing sitting across the applied strip.
  • Window > JuicyType is one item that opens the panel, with no flyout and no separate Swish entry.
  • The rule under the top bar is lighter and sits lower, with more air beneath the icons.

Windows

  • JuicyType runs on Windows: the panel opens from Window > JuicyType inside Illustrator and comes with its own installer.
  • The Windows build asks for a key and gates effects exactly as the Mac does — the activation screen fills the panel until you activate, then a status row at the bottom opens the license detail with Deactivate this machine and Renew — and your license is checked offline.
  • Popups, ticks, buttons, padlocks, range sliders and the sliders in sections such as Split Face and Pattern Slice all behave as they do on the Mac.
  • Rows appear and disappear on the same conditions as the Mac, so Rise, Depth, Axis, Aspect, Width and the rest show only when they apply.
  • Color chips show the color the art really has and open the same swatch menu, with your document's own swatches and gradients.
  • You can type a value into a box instead of only clicking to step it: Enter, Tab or a click away commits, Esc reverts, and the arrow keys nudge.
  • The Speedview eye is in the Windows panel too.
  • Shadowpuppet is not available in the Windows panel.

3D

  • Repeat extrusion draws copies of the letters back through the depth, with a gap you set and a Color ramp graduating their colors across the copies.
  • The 3D controls read Direction, Perspective, Tilt, Boom and then Push blocks, with Focal length renamed Perspective and the Push tick lined up with the others.
  • The layer Top, Side and Slope chips dim while Repeat extrusion's Color ramp is setting them, with a tooltip saying so, and stay live when Push is on.
  • The Mode popup sits directly above 3D style.

Cubes

  • Apply per cube gives you Split, Slice and Shape ticks, so an effect that spans the whole word is anchored on each block instead and repeats identically in every one, with each tick greyed until its effect is applied.
  • A knocked-out letter now reads as a hole punched right through the block, and it overrides Face color and Face raise.

Aura

  • Aura can take the artboard as its shape by default or use the shape below it, and Round corners runs from a square artboard to the oval that fills it.
  • The star gains Wave, with Ridges and Ridge size, and Twirl.
  • Aura also adds Text fit, an alternate option and bubble opacity.

Split Face

  • A Gap wall color chip beside Gap fill color colors the walls the gap opens through the body, which used to take an automatic color and read as a blank face under a tilt.
  • Angle is now Divider angle, the offset controls are headed "Shift divider line center", and the axis that runs parallel to the divider greys out.

Strokes

  • Fill on top leaves the Face fill row and becomes Face in front, the first row of the Strokes section, shown only while it has something to reorder.

Shadowpuppet

  • A new Wall shade control puts the floor (going down) or the wall (going up) outside the light pool into shade, up to a little over half strength at the extremes.
  • Out of light is hidden while Light pool is off, since there is no cone to be outside of.

Party!

  • Letters are spaced by the clearance the eye actually reads, so a pair touching at one tip no longer sits miles apart while a round-to-round pair jams.

Plaid

  • A sett too heavy to build falls back to a flat pattern instead of trying, and the refusal is remembered for the session so the next render goes straight there.

Wobble

  • Pour is hidden for now, until its shaping is finished.
  • Wobble has a new Edge texture control.

Install and update

  • JuicyType checks for updates shortly after launch and daily after that, tells you in the footer when there is one, and adds Check for Updates… to the menu.
  • An uninstaller for Mac and Windows removes every trace of JuicyType and leaves a report on your Desktop first.
  • On first launch a welcome message shows where to find JuicyType, with Don't show this again already ticked.
  • JuicyType works with Illustrator 29.

License

  • The activation screen is reworded, its buttons are Juicy pink, and the key field has room for its text and focus ring.
  • The trial starts on the website from one clickable line, and Buy a license opens the pricing page.
  • While you are on a trial the footer shows where you are in it, with links of its own, updating as the trial runs and on each launch once it ends.
  • A lifetime beta license reads "Beta · lifetime" rather than a bare word, and Renew is hidden on a lifetime license.
  • Deactivate this machine asks before it acts.
  • The license line carries the version, and the license detail opens from any panel view.

Fixes

  • Changes made in the panel were missing when you saved, closed and reopened the document.
  • Setting a swatch color on a Sticker band could crash Illustrator, and the effects came back reset.
  • Changing a color or a thread in Plaid set Thread to zero and the face went transparent; artwork already saved that way draws at its old scale until the panel writes a real thread back.
  • Undoing a change updated the artwork but left the panel showing the old colors.
  • Turning the 3D section off and back on replaced the depth you had typed with the default.
  • The gap between repeat copies was eaten by a raised face or raised stroke bands, so a large gap read like a small one.
  • Gradient was not applied to raised stroke walls at all, and Comic was applied differently there than on the body.
  • The receding walls of a raised stroke stack stepped like a staircase where a plain letter's wall steps cleanly.
  • The outer edge of the outermost raised stroke was left out of the extrusion.
  • Stepped slivers showed where a raised face met its extrusion.
  • A swatch color set on a raised stroke was gone when you came back to the artwork.
  • Push blocks merged letters sitting at different push depths.
  • Halftone's Feather stopped dead in a straight line where it ran out of room instead of fading out all round the letter.
  • The Spacing sliders in Aura and Party! closed the spacing up as you raised them; higher now means more space, and artwork you have already made renders exactly as before.
  • Aura's Starburst shapes could cross over themselves under strong Twirl and Wave on a shape with concave corners.
  • Cubes read the wide gap between two letters of a fat display face as a word space and broke a word into separate blocks.
  • With Apply per cube, Split's colors split per block while the cut itself still ran across the whole word.
  • Replacing a color from a By color row reached only some of the places it paints, and no chip repainted.
  • Changing a color in the By color list brought the row back without its tick.
  • The rest of the panel kept showing the old colors after you changed one in the list.
  • Adjusting several ticked colors at once changed only one of them, and could hand two of them the same new name so both ended up the same color.
  • Clicking a By color row's tick or its Edit link selected the color instead, isolating the view to that one color.
  • The color editor drew all of its sliders on top of one another.
  • The Colors view listed colors for applied effects that were switched off, and colors the effects no longer use.
  • The two color lists ran together with nothing to say which was which, and a 3D wall color set to a document swatch was missing from the By color list.
  • The Colors view said the artwork had no face color when it had one.
  • A color menu could name the wrong row as the current color — a typed face color read as Black.
  • Deselecting the text left the panel stuck in the Colors view; it now returns to the normal view and brings the Colors view back when you select that text again.
  • Edit in a By color row's chip menu opened the sheet on that row's first place only and split the color apart.
  • The H, S and B sliders could move ticked colors the view was hiding while you were editing another one.
  • Typing the name of a swatch the document already has, with New Swatch ticked, recolored that swatch everywhere; you now get a new swatch with the next free number, and the footer says so.
  • Nudging S upward turned every ticked gray red.
  • The revert mark drew on rows still sitting at their default, so a block of rows carried a column of identical marks that read as decoration.
  • Opening the face options a second time laid the panel out at the wrong height.
  • Adding an effect cut off the top of the effects grid for a moment, and the grid could ride over the applied strip.
  • The three buttons at the left of the top bar went away while the Flavor gallery was open, and stayed live with nothing selected even though they did nothing.
  • Buttons on a Flavor gallery tile did not respond, because the enlarged picture sat on top of them.
  • The fx options button did not close the effects drawer.
  • The Speedview on and off icons were the wrong way round.
  • The Speedview outline missed stroke-only paths and very thin shapes, leaving them unmarked.
  • The Ribbon Banner stroke row overlapped its label.
  • Activating with no seats left on a key said the key was not one we recognize instead of telling you every seat is in use.
  • The version line on the About screen sat over the wordmark.

To update, close Illustrator, run the new installer, then open Illustrator again. Your license carries over.
