What's new in JuicyType 0.9.5.6

September 19, 2026 · Beta · macOS

JuicyType 0.9.5.6 is a big beta update. It adds a new Colors view for editing every color in your artwork and Draft and Final render modes for faster work. It also brings 3D, Cubes and Aura improvements, and fixes a bug where panel changes could be lost when you saved.

Panel

  • The Colors view now shows two lists on one screen, By color and By effect, covering every color the switched-on effects paint on your text.
  • Each By color row shows the color's name, its chip and an Edit link, so you can replace that color everywhere it is used or change it live in an editor right under the row.
  • You can tick several colors and shift them together with H, S and B sliders that move each color relative to where it started, giving each its own new swatch in a single undo step.
  • The color editor shows before and after as one bar, lets you choose between a New swatch and updating the existing swatch everywhere, and explains on mouse-over why that choice grays out after your first change.
  • The color editor has a tidier layout, and the color list stays in place while you edit.
  • Creating a new color previews live on your artwork while you dial it in, Cancel puts everything back, and the preview leaves nothing behind in Edit > Undo.
  • The new color sheet adds an HSB model beside CMYK, RGB, Grayscale and PANTONE.
  • The Face fill is always in the Colors view, and it leads the By effect list under its own Face fill title.
  • Every By effect row says which color it is, such as Repeat start slope, Aura color or Bevel color 1, instead of just Color.
  • Grays read like grays, for example 46% Gray, White or Black, and other unnamed colors are written out in full instead of shown as a code.
  • The By color list leaves out the automatic 3D wall and Raise shades that follow the face, but it lists any wall you set to a swatch, and a gray wall once you have colored one beside it.
  • The 3D Slope color is listed only when your artwork actually uses it.
  • Color menus now start with Edit, then the colors your artwork already uses, then the rest.
  • Deselecting your text leaves the Colors view.
  • The panel header has three larger view icons on the left, Add fx, fx options and Colors, in place of the Applied Effects title.
  • The three view icons stay available inside the Flavor gallery and gray out when nothing valid is selected.
  • The effects grid always has three columns and scrolls when it does not fit, so every effect stays in the same place as the panel grows.
  • An empty effects strip now reads "Add fx to the selected text", points you to the Arrow tool when nothing is selected, and no longer carries a separate [+] tile.
  • Switched-off effects now sit last in the applied strip and read slightly brighter.
  • Each effect now carries a version, and artwork made with an older version shows a chip on its applied tile plus a note offering Dismiss or Update.
  • The Face fill row has an Options tick that shows or hides the extra face controls such as Knock out and Raise, and its case button now sits at the right edge.
  • Section headers are bigger, with the effect's name in bold beside a larger on/off checkbox.
  • The revert mark now appears only on rows you have changed.
  • Settings now opens in the panel body, and the ⋯ menu holds actions such as Remove all effects from text, which replaces Reset.
  • The Juice Bar and Flavor Library are now called the Flavor gallery, and Add flavor and the gallery have new icons.
  • In the Flavor gallery, Show flavors: Mine / Default lets you hide either kind of flavor.
  • Use actual object colors applies a flavor's recipe while your text keeps its own colors.
  • The Share buttons are gone from the Flavor gallery because uploading is not available yet.
  • A first-launch welcome shows where to find JuicyType, and the welcome tour has been restyled with centered, magenta-outlined bubbles that stay clear of the controls.
  • The feedback form is now called Share feedback everywhere, lets you pick Feature request, Bug or Feedback, and shows the screenshot preview only while Include a screenshot is ticked.
  • Window > JuicyType is now a single menu item with no flyout.

Speed

  • New Draft and Final render modes, switched with the eye in the panel header, let you work in the faster Draft mode (Speedview) and re-render your JuicyType text whenever you switch.
  • Your artwork is rendered in Final before Export and Print.
  • Every effect renders faster in Draft, and text with Wobble is noticeably faster.
  • In Draft, Drip places the same drips as Final without the finishing detail and renders noticeably faster.
  • In Draft, Shadowpuppet draws one hard-edged shadow instead of the soft one, which is noticeably faster, while the light pool, the out-of-light face and the solid body stay.
  • Wobble combined with 3D, Strokes or Sticker renders noticeably faster in both modes.
  • When renders stay slow twice in a row, JuicyType switches you to Draft and says so in the footer; a single slow render no longer triggers it.
  • A dismissable message explains Speedview, the dashed outline and the eye once per launch, with a Don't show this again option and a one-line reminder in the footer.
  • Text in Draft is marked with an outline that you can hide with Show Speedview outline or recolor with Speedview color (Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Red or Gray, the default).
  • You can turn the automatic switch to Speedview on or off from the ⋯ menu.

3D

  • 3D is now the first effect in the effects order.
  • New Repeat extrusion repeats the extrusion in copies with a Gap between them, and the gap stays the size you set even when the face or strokes are raised.
  • While Repeat extrusion's Color ramp is coloring the copies, the Top, Side and Slope chips gray out with a tooltip saying why, and faces keep the Face fill.
  • The geometry controls now read Direction, Perspective (formerly Focal length), Tilt, Boom and then Push, with the Push blocks tick lined up with the other ticks.
  • The Mode popup now sits just above 3D style.
  • Letters that Push blocks moves to different levels are no longer joined together.

Cubes

  • New Apply per cube ticks for Split, Slice and Shape make each of those effects repeat inside every block instead of spanning the whole word, and each tick grays out while its effect is not applied.
  • With per-cube Split, both the colors and the gap itself are cut block by block.

Aura

  • Aura now fills the artboard by default, with new Use shape below and Round corners options that take the shape from square to an oval.
  • Star auras gain Wave, with Ridges and Ridge size, and Twirl.
  • Aura adds Text fit, alternate and bubble opacity options.
  • The Spacing slider now runs the right way, with higher values giving more space, and existing documents look exactly as before.

Split Face

  • A new Gap wall color chip beside Gap fill color lets you color the walls the gap opens through a 3D body, which used to be automatic.
  • The divider controls are clearer, with a Shift divider line center heading, Angle renamed to Divider angle, and the axis parallel to the divider grayed out.

Shadowpuppet

  • A new Wall shade slider puts the floor (negative values) or the wall (positive values) outside the lamp's cone into shade, and at zero nothing changes.
  • Out of light is hidden while Light pool is off.

Party!

  • Letters are now spaced by the area between them rather than their single nearest point, so pairs that touch at a tip no longer sit far apart while round pairs jam together.
  • The spacing slider now runs the right way, with higher values giving more space, and existing documents look exactly as before.

Strokes

  • Fill on top is now Face in front and lives in the Strokes section under the Stroke effect popup, shown only while it can actually reorder the face and the strokes.

Wobble

  • Wobble gains an Edge texture option.
  • The Pour control is hidden for now while it is being reworked.

Windows

  • JuicyType's panel now opens inside Illustrator on Windows, with its own installer.
  • The Windows version asks for a license key just like the Mac. While unlicensed the activation screen fills the panel, and once licensed a status row at the bottom opens the license detail with Deactivate this machine and Renew.
  • You can type into value boxes on Windows: Enter, Tab or clicking away confirms, Esc reverts, and Up and Down change the value by 1, or by 10 with Shift.
  • Color chips on Windows show the color your artwork really has and open the same swatch menu as on the Mac.
  • Rows on Windows appear and disappear under the same conditions as on the Mac.
  • Windows gains sliders for Split Face and Pattern Slice, as well as padlocks and two-dot range sliders.
  • The Speedview eye is available in the Windows panel.
  • Shadowpuppet is not included on Windows.

License

  • The activation screen is reworded and easier to read, with pink buttons and a centered key field that has more room.
  • On the activation screen, the trial is now one line that starts it on the website, and Buy a license opens the pricing page.
  • The license line in the footer now shows the version, and a lifetime beta license reads "Beta · lifetime".
  • Renew is hidden on a lifetime license, and Deactivate asks before it goes ahead.
  • While you are on a trial, the footer shows messages as the end approaches, with the days left or the end date and buttons such as buying a license.
  • On the Mac, JuicyType now sends usage information about completed renders, such as the effects used, render time and your Mac's chip, memory and cores, along with your license ID and license type but never your license key.

Install and update

  • JuicyType now checks for updates shortly after launch and then once a day, shows a notice row in the footer that remembers when you dismiss it, and adds Check for Updates… to the menu.
  • Beta versions check for updates every three hours, so a newer beta shows up in the panel the same day.
  • Version numbers now have a fourth part, such as 0.9.5.6.
  • Uninstallers for Mac and Windows save a report to your Desktop and then remove every trace of JuicyType.
  • Improved compatibility with Illustrator 29.

Fixes

  • Changes made in the panel just before saving could be missing when you reopened the document.
  • Illustrator could crash when you gave a Sticker band a swatch color, and your effects were reset after recovery.
  • Editing any color or thread in Plaid could make the face turn transparent.
  • A Plaid design too complex to build now draws flat instead.
  • After an undo, the panel and the Colors view kept showing the colors from before the undo.
  • Nudging a color that was already one of JuicyType's own swatches kept creating numbered copies of it.
  • Picking a color on some chips in the Colors view left the row showing the old name and the By color list out of date.
  • A face color you typed in could be labeled Black in the Colors view.
  • Swatch colors set on raised strokes were gone when you left the section and came back.
  • Turning 3D off and back on made the extrusion depth jump to a different value.
  • A raised face or raised strokes could show stepped slivers or a staircase where they met the 3D extrusion walls, including along the outermost stroke's rim.
  • The Gradient slope style was not applied to raised stroke walls at all, and Comic was applied differently than on the body.
  • Knocked-out letters in Cubes were painted back over in the Face fill color. They are now punched holes that override Face color and Face raise.
  • Cubes could split a word with no spaces into separate blocks when a wide font left large gaps between letters.
  • Halftone's Feather was cut off in a straight line at the edge of the letters' bounding box.
  • The Ribbon Banner stroke row overlapped its label.
  • A very detailed font with raised strokes could keep rendering long after the time limit.
  • The Draft outline could miss open stroked paths and very thin shapes.
  • The effects grid could open with its top hidden under the applied effects strip, or flash cut off while you added an effect.
  • Ticking the face Options a second time laid the panel out wrong.
  • Buttons on Flavor gallery items did not respond to clicks because the enlarged preview covered them.
  • Clicking the fx options icon did not close the effects drawer.
  • The Speedview on and off icons were reversed.
  • The license detail would open only from some panel modes.
  • Activating on too many machines showed a message that the key was not recognized instead of explaining the seat limit.
  • The notice bubble clipped its own text, and the About screen's version line ran into the wordmark.

To update, close Illustrator, run the new installer, then open Illustrator again. Your license carries over.
