What's new in JuicyType 0.9.5.8

September 19, 2026 · Beta · macOS

JuicyType 0.9.5.8 adds Speedview with Draft and Final render modes, a rebuilt Colors view, and Knockout and Mask text. It also brings new controls across 3D, Cubes, Aura and more, plus a long list of fixes since 0.9.3.

Speed

  • You can now switch the whole panel between Draft and Final with the eye in the header, and switching re-renders every JuicyType object in the document.
  • Draft (Speedview) is noticeably faster for every effect, most of all for Drip, which keeps exactly the same drips, and Shadowpuppet, which shows one hard-edged shadow in place of the soft one.
  • Artwork is rendered in Final before Export and Print.
  • A dashed outline around the text shows that you are looking at Draft, with a Show Speedview outline checkbox and a Speedview color choice of Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Red or Gray (Gray by default).
  • When renders stay slow, JuicyType switches to Draft on its own and says so in the footer, and it now waits for two slow renders in a row so a single slow one no longer moves you.
  • A message explaining Speedview, the dashed outline and the eye appears once per launch with a "Don't show this again" option, and the footer keeps a one-line reminder.
  • You can turn the automatic switch to Speedview on or off in Settings.
  • Wobble combined with 3D, Strokes or Sticker renders noticeably faster.

Panel

  • The Colors view now shows two lists on one screen, headed By color and By effect.
  • By color lists every color the applied effects paint, one row per color with its name, chip and an Edit link, so you can replace a color everywhere from its chip or adjust it live in an editor under the row.
  • You can check several colors in the By color list and use the H, S and B sliders that appear to shift them together, each color moving relative to where it started.
  • Adjusting checked colors gives each one its own new swatch so the originals stay untouched, while swatches JuicyType already made are adjusted in place instead of being copied again.
  • Face fill is always listed, leads the By effect list under its own "Face fill" title, and editing an unnamed face color makes a swatch for it.
  • The Colors view lists only effects that are switched on, and every row says which color it is (Repeat start slope, Aura color, Bevel color 1, Second color and so on) instead of just "Color".
  • Automatic 3D wall and Raise shades that follow the face stay out of By color, but a wall you have pointed at a swatch is listed, the built-in gray walls are listed once a neighboring wall has been colored, and the Slope is listed only when the render uses it.
  • Grays now read like grays, such as "46% Gray", White or Black, and other unnamed colors are written out in full instead of as a short code.
  • The New color sheet adds an HSB mode beside CMYK, RGB, Grayscale and PANTONE.
  • The New color sheet previews live on your artwork while you dial the color, Cancel puts everything back, and the preview leaves nothing in Edit > Undo.
  • The New color sheet shows the old and new color side by side as one bar, with a New swatch checkbox beside the name that decides between making a new swatch and updating the existing one everywhere, and a Done button.
  • Hovering over the grayed New swatch and Update everywhere options now explains which swatch was made, that further changes re-color it, and that selecting the color again starts over.
  • Color menus now start with Edit, then the colors your artwork already uses, then the rest.
  • The color editor has a tidier layout, with both lists lined up on one grid and the list staying in view while you edit.
  • Deselecting the text leaves the Colors view, and selecting that text again brings the view back.
  • Knockout is now a popup with None, Knockout text and Mask text: Knockout text makes the letters a hole through the object below, and Mask text shows the object below only inside the letters.
  • A new Face only checkbox for Knockout lets you uncheck it so the entire effect, 3D, Sticker and all, becomes the hole or the mask.
  • Knockout now uses the closest object below that actually overlaps the text, whether a path or a group, instead of whatever sits next in the layer list.
  • Clicking the effect options icon on text with no effects now shows the face options.
  • The header now has three view icons on the left (Add fx, effect options and Colors) in place of the Applied Effects title, with larger top bar icons.
  • The three view icons stay available in the Flavor gallery and gray out when nothing valid is selected.
  • The effects grid always has three columns so every effect stays in the same place, and it scrolls when it does not fit.
  • The [+] tile is gone from the applied strip, and an empty strip now reads "Add fx to the selected text" or points you to the Selection tool (V) when nothing is selected.
  • Switched-off effects now sit last in the applied strip and read a little brighter.
  • Settings now takes over the panel body, and the ⋯ menu keeps actions only, with Feature request first, an Effect options submenu, and "Remove all effects from text" in place of Reset.
  • Section headers are bigger, with the effect's name in bold beside a large checkbox.
  • An Options checkbox on the Face fill row shows or hides case, Knock out and Raise, and the case button has moved to the right edge of the row.
  • The revert mark now shows only on rows you have changed.
  • Juice Bar and Flavor Library are now called the Flavor gallery, with new icons for Add flavor and the gallery.
  • A "Use actual object colors" checkbox in the Flavor gallery applies a flavor's recipe while the object keeps its own colors.
  • "Show flavors: Mine / Default" in the Flavor gallery lets you hide either category, and the unfinished Share buttons are gone.
  • A first-launch welcome shows where to find JuicyType, and the tour has a new look with centered, magenta-outlined bubbles.
  • Feedback is now "Share feedback" everywhere, with Feature request, Bug and Feedback choices and a screenshot preview that shows only while Include a screenshot is checked.
  • Window > JuicyType is now a single menu item with no flyout.
  • Artwork now remembers the version of each effect it was made with, and an applied tile made with an older version shows a chip and a note with Dismiss and Update.

3D

  • 3D gains Repeat extrusion, which repeats the extrusion in copies set apart by a gap, with a Color ramp across them.
  • The Repeat gap stays the size you set even when the face or strokes are raised.
  • The Top, Side and Slope color chips gray out while Repeat extrusion's Color ramp is coloring them, with a tooltip that says why.
  • The geometry controls now read Direction, Perspective (formerly Focal length), Tilt, Boom and then Push, and the Push blocks checkbox lines up with the other checkboxes.
  • With Push blocks, letters pushed to different levels stay separate instead of fusing together.
  • The Mode popup now sits just above 3D style.
  • 3D now comes first in the effects order.

Cubes

  • New Apply per cube checkboxes (Split, Slice and Shape) treat every block as its own canvas, so an effect that normally spans the whole word repeats inside each block.
  • Each Apply per cube checkbox is grayed out until its effect is applied.

Aura

  • Aura now fills the artboard by default or can use the shape below, and Round corners takes it from square to an oval that fills the artboard.
  • New Wave controls (Ridges and Ridge size) and a Twirl control shape the rays.
  • Aura also gains Text fit, Alternate and bubble opacity options.
  • The Spacing slider now runs the right way, with higher values giving more space, and existing documents look exactly as they did.

Split Face

  • A new Gap wall color chip beside Gap fill color lets you color the walls the gap opens through a 3D body, which used to be automatic.
  • The divider controls are clearer, with a "Shift divider line center" heading, Angle renamed Divider angle, and the axis parallel to the divider grayed out.

Shadowpuppet

  • A new Wall shade slider puts the floor (negative values) or the wall (positive values) outside the lamp's cone into shade in the shadow's color, and zero keeps the look you had before.
  • Out of light is hidden while Light pool is off.

Strokes

  • Fill on top is now called Face in front and sits at the top of the Strokes section under the Stroke effect popup, appearing only when it can actually change the order.

Party!

  • Letters are now spaced by the area between them rather than their single nearest point, so pairs that touch at one tip no longer sit far apart while round pairs jam together.
  • The spacing slider now runs the right way, with higher values giving more space, and existing documents look exactly as they did.

Wobble

  • Wobble has a new Edge texture option.

Plaid

  • An extremely dense Plaid design now falls back to a flat fill instead of building an enormous pattern.

Windows

  • JuicyType's panel now runs inside Illustrator on Windows, under Window > JuicyType > JuicyType, with its own installer.
  • Windows asks for a license key just like the Mac, showing the activation screen until you are licensed and then a status row at the bottom that opens the license detail with Deactivate this machine and Renew.
  • You can type into value boxes on Windows, with Enter, Tab or a click away applying the value, Esc reverting it, and the Up and Down arrows nudging it (Shift for bigger steps).
  • Color chips on Windows show the artwork's real color and open the same swatch menu as the Mac, and rows, padlocks and range sliders appear and behave as they do on the Mac.
  • The Speedview eye is available in the Windows panel.
  • Shadowpuppet is not included on Windows.

Install and update

  • JuicyType now checks for updates shortly after launch and then once a day, shows a notice row in the footer that stays dismissed once you close it, and adds "Check for Updates…" to the menu.
  • Beta builds check for updates every three hours instead of once a day.
  • Version numbers now carry a fourth build number, such as 0.9.5.8.
  • Uninstallers for Mac and Windows save a report to the Desktop and then remove every trace of JuicyType.

License

  • The activation screen is reworded, with the trial starting on the website from one clickable line and Buy a license opening the pricing page.
  • The license line now shows the version, a lifetime beta license reads "Beta · lifetime", Renew is hidden on a lifetime license, and Deactivate asks before it acts.
  • While you are on a trial, the footer shows messages about the days left and the end date with links to buy, and once the trial has ended they return at every launch.
  • Usage reports are now sent from release builds and are tied to your license ID (never your key), as covered by the privacy notice.

Fixes

  • Changes made in the panel could be lost on save, so reopening a document showed it without your latest edits.
  • On a fresh install the activation screen never appeared, leaving nowhere to enter a license key and every effect grayed out.
  • Setting a swatch color on a Sticker band could crash Illustrator and reset the effects after recovery.
  • Undo changed the artwork's colors while the panel kept showing the old ones.
  • In the Colors view, picking a color on a chip or changing colors in By color could leave the lists showing the old colors and names.
  • Editing a Plaid color or thread made the face go transparent.
  • Halftone's Feather was cut off in a straight line around large letters.
  • Turning 3D off and back on changed the depth you had set.
  • Raised strokes and raised faces showed stair-stepped slivers along their receding walls instead of matching the clean walls of the 3D body.
  • The Gradient slope style was not applied to raised stroke walls, and Comic was applied differently than on the body.
  • Swatch colors set on raised strokes disappeared after you left the panel and came back.
  • In Cubes, a wide gap between two letters of a display font was read as a word space and split one word into several blocks.
  • In Cubes, knocked-out letters were painted back over in the Face fill color instead of showing as punched holes that override Face color and Face raise.
  • The Ribbon Banner stroke row overlapped its label.
  • The top of the effects grid could hide under the applied strip or be cut off for a moment while an effect was added.
  • Checking the face Options a second time laid the panel out incorrectly.
  • Buttons on Flavor gallery items did not respond to clicks because the enlarged hover picture covered them.
  • Rendering a very complex font with raised strokes kept going long after it should have stopped.
  • Activating on too many machines showed a message saying the key was not recognized instead of explaining the seat limit.
  • The license detail opened only from some panel views, and the activation notice bubble clipped its own text.

To update, close Illustrator, run the new installer, then open Illustrator again. Your license carries over.
