What's new in JuicyType 0.9.5.9
JuicyType 0.9.5.9 is a big step up from 0.9.3: a new Draft mode keeps heavy artwork responsive, the Colors view lets you edit every color in your design from one place, and Knockout gains Mask text. There are also new options for 3D, Cubes, Aura and more, plus a long list of fixes.
Speed
- You can now switch between Draft and Final with the eye in the panel header: Draft renders every effect faster with coarser outlines, and Final renders everything in full.
- Switching modes re-renders every JuicyType object in the document, and JuicyType goes back to Final before Export and Print.
- Drip and Shadowpuppet are noticeably faster in Draft: Drip shows the same drips without the finishing detail, and Shadowpuppet draws one hard shadow instead of a soft one.
- Wobble combined with Strokes, Sticker or 3D renders noticeably faster.
- When renders stay slow, Speedview switches the object to Draft for you and says so in the footer.
- Speedview will not switch the same object again once you go back to Final by hand.
- Speedview now waits for two slow renders in a row, so a single slow render no longer switches you to Draft.
- A message explains Speedview, the dashed outline and the eye once per launch, with a "Don't show this again" checkbox.
- Text in Draft is marked with a dashed outline, which you can control with "Show Speedview outline" and a Speedview color (Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, Red or Gray, with Gray as the default).
- You can turn automatic Speedview on or off in Settings.
Panel
- The Colors view now shows a "By color" list and a "By effect" list on one screen, each with its own heading.
- By color gives every color your effects paint one row with its name, its chip and an Edit link, so you can replace a color everywhere from the chip or adjust it live in the editor.
- You can tick several colors in By color and nudge them together with H, S and B sliders that move each color relative to where it started, all in one undo step.
- Adjusting a color that already sits on a swatch in the JuicyType swatch group now changes that swatch instead of making a numbered copy.
- The Face fill is always listed, and it leads By effect under its own "Face fill" title.
- By color lists every color you can see: automatic 3D wall and Raise shades stay out, a wall you set to a swatch is listed, and the default gray walls join the list once one of them has been colored.
- The 3D Slope color is listed only when the render actually uses it.
- Every row in the Colors view now says which color it is, such as Repeat start slope, Aura color, Bevel color 1 or Second color, instead of just "Color".
- Grays now read like "46% Gray" (or White and Black), and other unnamed colors are written out instead of showing as "#777".
- The new color sheet gains an HSB model beside CMYK, RGB, Grayscale and PANTONE.
- The new color sheet previews your color live on the artwork while you dial it, leaves nothing in Edit > Undo while you drag, and Cancel puts the artwork back.
- The new color sheet shows before and after as one split bar, with a New swatch checkbox beside the name and a Done button.
- The New Swatch checkbox decides whether an edit makes a new swatch or updates the existing one everywhere, and once the choice is settled, hovering over the grayed options explains why.
- The color editor has a cleaner layout, with both lists lined up the same way and the list staying in view while you edit.
- Every color menu now starts with Edit, followed by the colors this artwork already uses, then the rest of the swatches.
- Deselecting the text leaves the Colors view, and selecting that text again brings it back.
- Knockout is now a popup with None, Knockout text and Mask text, where Mask text shows the object below only inside the letters.
- Knockout has a new "Face only" checkbox: untick it and the whole effect, 3D, Sticker and all, becomes the hole or the mask.
- Knockout now uses the closest object below that actually overlaps the text, whether it is a path or a group, instead of the next item in the layer list.
- The header now has three view icons on the left (Add fx, fx options and Colors) in place of the "Applied Effects" title, with larger top bar icons and a Juicy magenta selection.
- The three view icons stay in place when the Flavor gallery is open and dim when nothing valid is selected.
- The Add fx tile is gone from the applied strip, and an empty strip now says "Add fx to the selected text", or points you to the Selection tool (V) when nothing is selected.
- The effects grid is always three columns and scrolls when it needs to, so every effect stays in the same place.
- Switched-off effects now sit last in the applied strip and read a little brighter.
- The Face fill row has an Options checkbox that shows or hides the case, Knockout and Raise controls, and the case button moves to the right edge.
- Clicking the fx options icon on text with no effects now shows the face options.
- Section headers are bigger, with the effect's name in bold beside a large checkbox, and the spacing around the face area stays the same whether Options is open or closed.
- The revert mark now appears only on rows you have changed.
- Settings now opens in the panel body, and the ⋯ menu keeps actions only, with Feature request first, an Effect options submenu and "Remove all effects from text" in place of Reset.
- The Flavor gallery (formerly Juice Bar / Flavor Library) can show or hide your own and the default flavors with "Show flavors: Mine / Default".
- You can tick "Use actual object colors" in the Flavor gallery to apply a flavor's recipe while the object keeps its colors.
- The Flavor gallery's Share buttons are gone, and Add flavor and Flavor library have new icons.
- An applied effect made with an older version of that effect shows an old-version chip and a note with Dismiss and Update.
- Feedback is now "Share feedback" everywhere, with Feature request, Bug and Feedback buttons, and a screenshot preview that appears only while "Include a screenshot" is ticked.
- The welcome tour has a new look, with centered gray plates outlined in magenta that stay clear of the controls, and it ends with "That's it, now you can get cooking!".
- Window > JuicyType is now a single menu item with no flyout.
3D
- 3D now comes first in the effects order.
- Repeat extrusion is new: repeat the extrusion in copies with a Gap between them and a Color ramp from start to end colors.
- The Repeat extrusion Gap stays the size you set even when the face or strokes are raised.
- The Top, Side and Slope color chips gray out while Repeat extrusion's Color ramp is setting them, with a tooltip that says so.
- The geometry controls now read Direction, Perspective (formerly Focal length), Tilt, Boom, then Push, and the Push blocks checkbox lines up with the other checkboxes.
- The Mode popup now sits just above 3D style.
Cubes
- You can now use "Apply per cube" with Split, Slice and Shape checkboxes, so each block becomes its own canvas and the effect repeats in every block instead of running across the whole word.
- The Apply per cube checkboxes are grayed out while their effect is not applied.
- A knocked-out letter is now a punched hole through its block, and it overrides the Face color and Face raise settings.
Aura
- Aura now fills the artboard by default, or you can choose Use shape below, with Round corners running from square to an oval that fills the artboard.
- Aura gains Wave, with Ridges and Ridge size, and Twirl.
- Aura also gains Text fit, alternate and bubble opacity options.
- The Spacing slider now runs the right way, so a higher number means more space, and existing documents look exactly as they did.
Split Face
- You can now color the walls the gap opens through a 3D body with a new "Gap wall color" chip beside Gap fill color.
- The section now has a "Shift divider line center" heading, Angle is renamed Divider angle, and the axis parallel to the divider grays out.
Party!
- Letters are now spaced by the overall space between them rather than their nearest points, so pairs touching at a tip no longer sit far apart, round pairs no longer jam, and nothing collides.
- The spacing slider now runs the right way, so higher means more space, and existing documents look exactly as they did.
Shadowpuppet
- A new Wall shade slider puts the floor (negative values) or the wall (positive values) outside the lamp's cone into shade.
- Out of light is hidden while Light pool is off.
Strokes
- "Face in front" replaces "Fill on top" and now lives in the Strokes section under the Stroke effect popup, shown only when it can actually reorder the face and the strokes.
Wobble
- Wobble gains an Edge texture option.
- Pour is hidden for now until it is ready.
Windows
- The JuicyType panel now opens inside Illustrator on Windows from the Window menu.
- You can type into value boxes: Enter, Tab or clicking away commits, Esc reverts, and the Up and Down arrows step the value, with Shift for bigger steps.
- Color chips show the color the artwork really has and open the same swatch menu as the Mac, including the document's swatches and gradients.
- Rows appear and disappear under the same conditions as on the Mac, and popups, checkboxes, buttons, padlocks and two-dot range sliders behave the same way.
- Windows now asks for a license key just like the Mac: the activation screen fills the panel until you are licensed, then a status row at the bottom opens the license detail with Deactivate this machine and Renew.
- The Speedview eye is available in the Windows panel.
- Shadowpuppet is not included on Windows.
Install and update
- JuicyType now checks for updates shortly after launch and then once a day, shows a notice row in the footer that remembers when you dismiss it, and adds "Check for Updates…" to the menu.
- Beta versions now check for updates every three hours instead of once a day.
- A first-launch welcome shows where to find JuicyType, with "Don't show this again" ticked by default.
- Version numbers now have a fourth part, such as 0.9.5.1.
- An uninstaller for Mac and Windows saves a report to your Desktop and then removes every trace of JuicyType.
License
- The activation screen is reworded and roomier, with a centered key field and JuicyPink buttons.
- On the activation screen the trial now starts on the website from one clickable line, and Buy a license opens the pricing page.
- While you are on a trial, the footer shows messages about the days left, with buttons such as buying a license from the panel.
- The license line now carries the version number, and a lifetime beta license reads "Beta · lifetime".
- Renew is hidden on a lifetime license, and Deactivate now asks before it acts.
- JuicyType now sends usage reports as described in the privacy notice: one per completed render, plus a heartbeat while the panel is open on a juiced object.
- Each usage report carries your license ID and license type, never your key.
Fixes
- Changes made in the panel just before saving could be missing when you reopened the document.
- Sliders ignored the first click in the panel until you clicked into a number field.
- A new install with no effects applied showed every effect grayed out and nowhere to enter a license key; the activation screen now appears.
- Undo changed the artwork but the panel and the Colors view kept showing the old settings and colors.
- The Colors view listed the colors of effects that were switched off.
- The Colors view could keep showing old names and chips after you picked or changed a color.
- Illustrator crashed when a Sticker band was given a swatch color, and the effects were reset after recovery.
- Changing a Plaid color or thread made the face go transparent.
- An extremely complex Plaid now falls back to a flat fill instead of building an enormous pattern.
- Swatch colors set on raised strokes were forgotten when you left the section and came back.
- Turning 3D off and back on replaced your depth with a different value.
- Raised faces and raised strokes showed stepped slivers and staircase seams where they met the 3D extrusion, including at the outermost stroke's rim.
- The Gradient slope style was not applied to raised stroke walls, and Comic looked different there than on the letter body.
- Push blocks could merge letters pushed to different depths.
- Cubes treated a wide gap between two letters as a word space and split one word into separate blocks.
- Halftone's Feather was cut off in a straight line at the letter's bounding box.
- The Ribbon Banner stroke row overlapped its label.
- Heavy renders with raised strokes, such as previewing a very complex font from the font menu, kept running long after the render limit.
- Ticking the face Options checkbox a second time laid the panel out wrong.
- The Knockout popup could stay hidden or nearly invisible until you unticked and re-ticked Options.
- The effects grid was briefly cut off when an effect was added, and its top could hide under the applied strip.
- Item buttons in the Flavor gallery did not respond to clicks.
- The license detail could not be opened from some panel views.
- Activating on too many machines showed "not one we recognize" instead of the message about seats.
- The notice bubble clipped its own text.
- The version line on the About screen now sits clear of the wordmark.
To update, close Illustrator, run the new installer, then open Illustrator again. Your license carries over.
