How to fill text with a plaid or tartan pattern in Illustrator

Updated September 2026 · Illustrator 2025–2026 · about 4 min

The built-in route is to draw the stripes, make a swatch with Object › Pattern › Make, overlay a rotated copy for the second direction, and set it as the text's fill. JuicyType's Plaid effect weaves the two directions properly from a list of stripes, live on the text.

The manual way, in Illustrator

  1. Draw a row of vertical stripes in your colours inside a square, then duplicate the row, rotate it 90° and set it to Multiply or 50% opacity over the first.
  2. Select everything and choose Object › Pattern › Make; set the tile to the square and click Done.
  3. Select the text, add a new fill in the Appearance panel (Window › Appearance), and choose the new swatch.
  4. Scale or rotate the pattern with Object › Transform › Scale…, with only Transform Patterns ticked.

A Multiply overlay is not a weave: every crossing darkens the same way, where real cloth shows warp or weft in turn. And changing one stripe means rebuilding the swatch.

Common questions

Is it a real pattern swatch?

Yes. Plaid fills the face with an Illustrator pattern, not with clipped shapes, so it behaves like any swatch and the file stays light.

Can I use my own colours?

Every stripe is a thread count and a colour of your choice, including document spots. Warp and weft can match or differ.

Does the cloth move with the word?

Your choice. Align to Word carries it with the text; Align to Artboard keeps one cloth running behind several words.
